K Sports travelled to Holcombe this week to play the Kent super club’s 4th XI. Last seasons match saw the home team play a flat back XI to keep out the high scoring men in black, white and red, and this season would be similar. K Sports lined up with Al Burt between the sticks, James Clarkely, Andy Mendl and Mick Nock in defence. Kai Wilson, Matt Sharp, Ewan Hendry, Paul Cook and Ben Newmarch commanding the middle of the park. With Dave Wood and Brook Fowler up top. Jamie Carmillet stepped up from the 2nd XI to assist the injury stricken 1st XI.
Holcombe sat deep and allowed the K Sports team to attack, looking to catch K Sports on the counter attack. Holcombe managed to thwart most of the attacks until Mick Nock scored from a penalty corner, with a flick into the roof of the net.
Nock would come close again, as he flicked the ball into the top left hand corner, only for the defender on the post to miraculously pick the ball out of the air to keep the score 1-0 at half time.
Holcombe started amazingly fast in the second half and scored within 90 seconds of the restart. K Sports replied immediately after, when Paul Cook interlinked with Brook Fowler. He played an inch perfect pass to Matt Sharp, who fired a blistering shot to beat the keeper at the far post.
K Sports dominated possession and exerted more pressure on the Holcombe defence, who were well up to the task. With 6 minutes to go Kobs then went 3-1 up, through a Dave Wood strike at the top of the D, from a penalty corner.
Holcombe Rallied and scored another goal, but it was just too late and K Sports took the 3 points. Matt Sharp took the Man of the Match shirt following an impressive display of grit, determination, and will to win.
Next week K Sports have a home fixture against Sevenoaks at 16:30. Supporters are most welcome.
