In this their first game of 2018 the Ladies 2nd XI welcomed Blackheath. The Christmas festivities had certainly taken their toll on the K Sports 2nd XI as they struggled to find any sort of fluency to their game. It was a matter of trying to quell the onslaught of pressure in the first half as they were subjected to wave after wave of attack from their opposition. Jen Divall, Tracey Smith, Sue Rea and Kat Lichfield were alert and tireless in defence whilst Player of the Match, Lorraine Mullaly was immense in her duties as goalkeeper. With Emma Thorpe, Jenny Rogers and Holly Turner also adding to the wall of defiance and Anna Pirozzolo snapping at the opposition, K Sports managed to restrict the visitors to just a two goal advantage at half time.

That is not to say that the home side did not make some breaks of their own with Maddie Thorp, Holly Bernhard, Sharon Turville and Kayleigh Smith all making some great space for the ball to find its way forward, particularly from Divall’s great passes from the back.

With time to re-set themselves and listening intently to instructions from ladies coach, Scott Montgomery, K Sports came out in the second half and managed to make inroads into the visitors circle. Kayleigh Smith and Sharon Turville started to create some lovely interchange of passes with Turner, Lex Maritz and Phil Ward and this led to the team in black halving the deficit. Turville produced one of her glorious square passes which Ward seized upon with delight. The ensuing shot fell to Maddie Thorp who calmly slotted the ball past the keeper from the hand right hand side.

This gave K Sports greater impetus and they started to find their fluency which had been their trade mark before the Winter break. Ward and Thorp led the charge out on the right while Kayleigh Smith and Maritz were doing likewise on the left and the unassuming Turville linking the play whenever needed in the middle.

Despite pressing forward and going close on occasions K Sports could not find the equaliser and were unfortunate to concede a third late on. However, their improved second half display gives them renewed confidence for their trip to Marden next week.
