The miserably wet afternoon home game put paid to K Sports Ladies 2s winning streak when they met the very efficient Burnt Ash 6s. From the off the visitors assaulted K Sports circle and within the first few minutes were awarded a penalty corner, which they converted.
This was shortly followed by an own goal courtesy of skipper, Kat Lichfield, who in trying to deflect a shot on goal, tipped it into the back of the net instead, completely wrong footing goalkeeper Lorraine Mullaly. K Sports normal free flowing game was just not happening, they lost shape and bunching was becoming a feature. Burnt Ash took advantage and put a 3rd goal away before the half time whistle.
A constructive half time talk saw the girls come out with determination to pick up their game. There was some lovely linked play from Kirsty Wood through to Fi Percival, who found Karen Swinson a number of times out wide and driving the ball into the circle would fire in the cross but Sharon Turville and Kayleigh Smith were too well marked to capitalise.
Maddie Thorp also picked up a number of good passes and worked hard to outwit the opposition and drive the ball forwards. Backed up by Alexis Maritz the pair were unlucky not to bear fruit from their efforts. Out on the left, Kayleigh Smith was like a terrier fighting for possession and then using her speed to outrun the visitors. Kelly Danaher came on pitch to give the forwards a breather and held her width giving the midfield options. But try as they may, Burnt Ash were preventing the girls in black from having a good day.
In defence Tracy Smith was working hard marshalling her backs and thwarting the continual attacks from Burnt Ash. But it was Player of the Match, Emma Thorpe, who worked her socks of channelling the visitor’s captain off the pitch time and again and putting in some deadly tackles, stealing the ball and then running it back up the other end of the pitch. Anna Pirozzolo using her keen eye, also put in some timely tackles and did a fine job of marking out one of Burnt Ash’s dangerous players.
The second half saw 2 more goals from the visitors, one a complete lapse in concentration as the ball just rolled into the goal under the very noses of Mullaly and Smith. The other was a fine strike from a penalty corner, which was spotted by post defender Lichfield who blocked the shot but wasn’t able to prevent it then skipping over her stick and over the goal line.
A second own goal just about summed up K Sports game; a 0-5 disaster, however it was a match played in good spirit from both teams but one the home side wish to put to bed as they prepare to meet Burnt Ash’s other, higher placed team in this division next week.
