Although Sue Rea took the plaudits with the winning goal five minutes from the final whistle, it was the team’s character and resilience that was the key factor in this victory over a stubborn Dartford team. Throughout the side there were players who were giving there all for the team. From Fi Percival’s cameo appearance, through to Emma Thorpe’s goalline clearance after keeper Lorraine Mullaly was beaten there were some great performances by the 2nd XI.
Maddie Thorp sacrificed her regular role to allow debutant Jo Perry to impress out on the right wing, while Kelly Danaher followed in Sharon Turville’s footsteps by playing some lovely passes to link up play. Phil Ward was terrific in her support of the forward line which included the clever running of Caitlin Banstead. While Anna Pirozzolo’s strike against the post almost sent the whole of the team in black into ecstasy after her gutsy display.
The side welcomed back Jen Divall after her absence from injury and Tracy Smith, Holly Turner and Kat Lichfield followed her example in keeping calm, despite some moments which could have caused panic in less assured defences.
After a couple of defeats this was a welcome result for the home side, building confidence as they welcome New Beccehamian 3rd XI next Saturday.
